A fencing quote is only comparable when the specification is clear — this guide covers how to define purpose, type, materials, survey and the details a commercial fencing quote should cover.

Define what the fence is for
Every fencing specification should start from purpose, because the purpose decides almost everything else. A boundary marker, a security deterrent, a safety barrier and a screen are different jobs, and each points to a different fence type, height and material. Name the purpose first and the rest of the specification follows logically.
Most sites carry more than one need along different runs of boundary — a secure perimeter to the yard, a lower demarcation line to the frontage, screening to a bin store. Set each section out by purpose rather than specifying one fence for the whole site, so each run is fit for what it actually has to do.

Choose the right type and material
Commercial fencing comes in distinct families, each suited to a purpose. Welded mesh and palisade are common where security and a clear deterrent matter; timber and close-board suit demarcation and screening; and railings and bow-top suit public-facing and access-controlled settings. Match the family to the purpose you defined rather than to a default.
Within a type, the specification details carry the performance: height, gauge or post size, mesh aperture, coating or treatment, and the fixings. These are what determine how the fence performs and how long it lasts, so set them out explicitly. Material should be specified to your site and its exposure rather than left for the contractor to assume.

Survey, ground conditions and line
A fencing price lives or dies on what is in the ground, so a site survey should come before the specification is finalised. The survey confirms ground conditions, slopes and levels, the true length and line of the boundary, access for installation, and any buried services that affect where and how posts can be set.
Ground conditions in particular drive cost and method. Rock, made ground, soft ground and services all change how posts are fixed and how long the work takes. A specification written without a survey invites variation charges the moment excavation starts, so confirm the ground before anyone prices the line.

Gates, access and security details
Access points need specifying as carefully as the fence line. Pedestrian and vehicle gates, their width, swing or slide, locking, and any controlled-access requirement should all be set out, because a gate is usually where a secure line is most tested. Define how each opening works and who needs to use it.
Where security is the purpose, the details around the access points matter most: the fixings, the toppings, the gate hardware and how the line meets buildings and existing structures. A secure perimeter is only as strong as its weakest opening, so specify the access details to the same standard as the run itself.

A quote you can compare like for like should cover the fence type, height and specification, the line and length, the ground conditions and fixing method, gates and access points, removal of any existing fencing, and reinstatement of the ground afterwards. With each item stated, every contractor prices the same job and the cheapest number reflects scope, not omissions.
Confirm the contractor’s cover and competence alongside the price: public and employer’s liability insurance, method statements and risk assessments for the installation, and a recognised safety accreditation such as CHAS Advanced. A contractor confident in the work will quote against a clear specification and welcome a survey rather than pricing blind.
